Before television and the internet, radio was the primary way people accessed news, entertainment, and music. THE 5 W’S of Radio • Who: Radio involves presenters, producers, sound engineers, advertisers, and audiences. Each plays a role in shaping the listening experience. • What: Radio is a medium that delivers spoken word, music, and sound effects to inform, entertain, and educate. • When: Radio broadcasting began in the early 20th century. In South Africa, the first broadcast was in 1923. • Where: Radio can be local (community stations), national (SABC stations), or international (BBC World Service). • Why: Radio is affordable, portable, and culturally significant. It preserves languages, shares stories, and connects communities. Radio is a form of electronic mass communication that uses sound to inform, educate, and entertain audiences. It broadcasts content such as music, news, talk shows, drama, and advertisements through radio waves to listeners’ receivers. In South Africa, radio is one of the most accessible media platforms, reaching people in urban and rural areas, often in their home languages. History of Radio in South Africa • Radio broadcasting in South Africa began in the 1920s • The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) was established in 1936 • During apartheid, radio was state-controlled • After 1994, radio became more democratic with the growth of: o Public radio (SABC) o Commercial radio o Community radio Types of Radio Stations in South Africa 1. Public Radio o Run by the SABC o Examples: Ukhozi FM, Metro FM, SAFM o Focus on public service and education 2. Commercial Radio o Privately owned, profit-driven o Examples: 947, Kaya FM, Jacaranda FM 3.
